Review:
I liked the cover - it looked really interesting. The title gave me the impression it would be about birds trying on different hats but it was even better.
This book had all the things I like: birds, hats, painting and pictures.
I liked the illustrations because they were colourful and they helped me imagine the characters. My favourite picture was the one of Vernon in the flower bush - that made me laugh.
The story was good and really interesting, especially when Jayne was hearing the strange noises. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I would like to live in Rookscroft because it sounds like a fun place with lots of entertaining things happening.
I give this book: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ five stars

It began one morning in late summer, when a pheasant appeared at my studio window. At first, I was startled - "but my surprise quickly turned to delight when I noticed he was wearing a top hat, pulled down quite low.
I hurried to the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of him as he fled. But to my astonishment, when I opened it, he was standing there on the mat. There was a pause. He looked me over, blinked - and then, he began to speak.
He introduced himself as Vernon Cotterill and asked if I would be willing to paint his portrait, an offer I joyfully accepted, and that, my friends, is how this whole adventure began.
