Review:
This is such a beautiful book in so many ways. The first thing that strikes you is the illustrations. The colours and textures bring the world to life as the story unfolds you are drawn in to a world of adventure with Lia and Lion. Vivid colours and bold strokes leap off the page.
The story itself is one of friendship and compromise. An important lesson for young children who can find it difficult to see the point of view of others (as can come adults). Lia and Lion find themselves in that very situation- both unwilling to budge on their own ideas. Until that is they discover that just maybe working together helps them have fun.
I particularly like that Lia and Lion seem to move between the adult/child - at times each voicing concerns and assurances in the way you would have that conversation with a young child.
This is one of this books that works as its own lovely story perfect for sharing together. But you could take it further. Open up conversations about empathy, compromise, adventure and friendship. It is proof that picture books are not just for our youngest children. There is so much that our older children can explore and learn from them.
A truly beautiful book that is perfect for Empathy Week this week.
Author Information
Al Rodin is a writer and illustrator from London. He studied children's book illustration at Cambridge School of Art and received the 2019 Sebastian Walker Prize. Al enjoys working with a wide variety of materials including acrylic, watercolour and collage. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries around Europe and Asia, and he was selected for lllustrators' Exhibition at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2019.
