Review:
Still as magical now as it was when I was a child!
I have to say my first thought at seeing this book was ‘oh my gosh it’s as old as me’ followed by a feeling of being very old - then, quickly being made to feel very young again as I read the story and was transported back to the fun and imagination of my childhood.
Winnie and Wilbur are a perfect pair and they have aged with grace, humour and of course marvellous magic.
When Winnie keeps falling over Wilbur she uses her magic to change him - but she soon realises that changing Wilbur isn’t the answer and perhaps she needs to change something a little closer to home.
A simple but fun story that had us laughing as we read. A beautiful message embedded about loving others just as they are. The focus is on the humorous side of Winnie not seeing Wilbur but there’s also plenty of opportunities to talk about feelings and colour if you were using it as a topic book. (And if you are thinking of using it for school or nursery then the opportunities are endless)
A book full of illustrations that are detailed and captivating. There is something to explore on every page and we spent ages picking out our favourite expressions and details. My favourite was Wilbur’s expression at the top of the stairs.
As well as the wonderful story this addition has even more magical bonus pages. A mini gallery of Winnie and Wilbur’s magical memories - a wonderful way to discuss your own favourite stories from the series. Or if this is the first one you have read - temptation to go out and get some more!
We also loved looking at the making of pages - Little Bookworm is just getting to the stage of writing her own ‘books’ and this was a fascinating insight in to the process for real life authors and illustrators. A perfect teaching tool.
Thank you for letting us be part of this special milestone - may Winnie and Wilbur continue to entertain many more generations in the years ahead.
