Review:

Tilly’s Sandcastle is a wonderful story about how things don’t always stay the same. This is a really hard life lesson for young children. They become very attached to things and find it difficult to understand when they aren’t always there. The sandcastle is a perfect visual example. There’s nothing that we can do to stop the tide taking it away no matter how much we love it or want to keep it.

I read this book to little bookworm who is 5 - she had recently been to the beach with her grandparents and built a sandcastle so she definitely related. The story was simple but she enjoyed discussing the pictures and talking about it as we read. More importantly she has asked for it again so clearly liked it.

I would definitely use this book with my early years children and it is ideal for any child who needs a simple plot and bold images to help with understanding. In my experience there aren’t enough of those books around. Some children don’t get anything from long winded picture books. Children need simplicity done well and that’s what this book is.

Both little bookworm and I also really liked the idea of mermaids playing with the shells at night and then the sea bringing them back each day for us to use. It sparked little bookworm’s imagination and triggered a whole host of conversation and story telling. What more could you want from a book that the inspire children to be creative themselves.

I really wish I had a book like this when little bookworm was younger because it would have been a brilliant aid to help her understand her feelings and situations.

Definitely a series I would like to explore more for use in my setting. Thank you for my gifted copy which will be shared with love.
