Review:
This is a wonderful book - which has definitely left me wanting more.
Initially I found it hard to get in to the story(trying to read at the end of term in a heatwave was not good for my brain) However, despite struggling with focus I enjoyed every part of it and once I was able to relax I found myself flying through chapters. I actually gave up with other book at this time but Mairi kept pulling me in - a true sign of a good book.
There are many characters (some more vital to the story and others have more of an extras role) The use of additional characters though adds to the plot and the who done it effect. There were several times I convinced myself one of these characters must be responsible only to change my mind after reading some more. It really added to my experience as a reader and made me feel part of the story.
The plot is interesting and not what I had expected initially. Mairi is a very strong lady - she knows her own mind and although she abides by some social expectations she is not afraid to stand up for herself. Ellis had me torn - there were times when I found him to be patronising and as you would imagine a man of that time. Yet there were other moments when he seemed somewhat progressive in his views for the time.
Overall I found this book a good read, interesting, factual and leading wonderfully in to the next adventure. I look forward to the next instalment and will definitely be recommending and sharing Death in Paris with others.
I received a copy of this book as part of the Read Along and in return for my honest review.
