Review:

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It was more serious than I had anticipated in places and definitely touched on some difficult topics. All of this added to the bond I felt with the characters as I read. They were not superficial additions to move the story on. Each had a clear role and was rooted firmly in the story - connected in subtle ways.

Trigger warnings: abortion, controlling/ abusive relationships

A well written book about taking control and following your dreams - even if you weren’t sure what they were.

Lily deserves her promotion - she’s worked hard for it and she’s the best person for the job - but it’s a man’s world and life’s not fair. Her boyfriend Matt should understand but his sights are set on a move to Singapore- Lily at his side a lady that lunches.

Lily has other ideas - an impromptu visit to the coast to visit her aunt leads to a very impromptu purchase and career change. And so Lily’s Little Flower Shop is born.

Lily is a strong character, determined to succeed and loveable for taking a risk. There is something she’s holding back though. Something from her past that is hinted at throughout the story. It’s a small hook but it keeps you reading and is revealed as we move through the book.

The cast of locals in Clearwater are a colourful bunch. Each with their own story that unfolds as you read on. Zena and Andy are the first to embrace Lily with friendship and their bond is a strong one. Each with their own secrets and past - slowly they come to share the load allowing them to move on with their lives. Zena’s bold fashion and care free attitude exudes from the page - you can’t help but love her and want the best for her.

There were only really two characters that were unlikable (Matt and Pamela) both wanting their own way and not caring either way who they hurt in the process. I found Matt unlikeable from the very beginning and his controlling behaviour through didn’t endure him to me any more.   I liked how the author set the tone with him. Small hints for the reader that Lily appeared to be completely blind to at first.

Romance is high in this book between several of the characters. Misunderstandings, missed opportunities but ultimately a happy ending for all.

I really did enjoy this book - Thank you!
